IDEIA is a research group created in 2011 as an acronym for Interinstitutional Group on School Performance and Academic Inclusion, in an interinstitutional partnership between the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP-Diadema), the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) and the University of São Paulo (USP).

Between 2011 and 2015, we worked collaboratively on the project INCLUSIVE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE FROM A MULTIDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE, funded by CAPES/INEP – EDUCATION OBSERVATORY (funding of US$900,000*).

Among the objectives of the project, we studied the estimated influence of learning disabilities on school performance indices in Portuguese, Mathematics and Introduction to Science; the relationships between school performance in Language, Mathematics and Introduction to Science; the influence of testing technology on the final result of performance tests in Language, Mathematics and Introduction to Science; and we developed training and instructional materials that address learning difficulties. The academic production from this period is available here.

In 2019, the group was renamed IDEIA – EDUCAÇÃO EM CIÊNCIAS (Science Eucation) and dedicated to developing research and out-of_university actions in  Teaching/Education in Science, within the major themes: public curriculum policies, teacher preparing and assessments (institutional, large-scale, external) and scientific communication.

In 2019, the project SCIENCE TEACHING, STEM EDUCATION AND TEACHING BY RESEARCH: A PROPOSAL FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF BASIC EDUCATION IN SÃO VICENTE DO SUL/RS (funding from MCTIC/CNPq  of ~US$13.5 thousand*) was approved. In partnership with researchers from the Instituto Federal Farroupilha – São Vicente do Sul (IFFar – SVS) the project analyzed the feasibility of STEM education in the context of public schools in São Vicente do Sul/RS through the development of experimental activities with basic education students, as well as from the perspective of teachers in service and in training at IFFar. GEMS – STEM Movement Study Group was created.

In 2020, the group created Toda Cidade Ensina. The project (funded by PROLICEN 2020, FIEX 2021, FIEX 2022 and RedeBásica da UFSM) aims to combine remote teaching of natural sciences and scientific literacy, through the production of audiovisual resources. These are videos adapted to the skills proposed by the current  common curricula (BNCC/RCG/DOC-SM) that are part of the TV Câmara de Santa Maria programming. In addition to the videos, posts are produced for social media (@todacidadeensina) and support materials for teachers. A multidisciplinary team formed to build a collection of digital educational resources (videos and supplementary materials) establishes an institutional reference for scientific and technological literacy and popularization of science.

In 2021, with the approval of a funding from FAPERGS SEBRAE/RS, (funding of ~US$8 thousand*) we began investigating the interests of young people from Rio Grande do Sul in Science and Technology and the effects of the pandemic on their professional options. We developed and applied a questionnaire (called ROSES-RS) to a sample of 2,000 young people from Rio Grande do Sul, aged 15, from all regions of the state, to learn about their interests in science and technology, understand their expectations and professional desires, as well as the effects on their choices regarding high school training paths. The first results will be published in a book to be launched at an event in May 2023. More information at projetoroses@ufsm.br.
