Before arriving in Brazil

 Important information

Before arriving in Brazil, it is important to update your vaccination status. Although it is not mandatory to provide proof of vaccination to enter the country, the Ministry of Health recommends ensuring that vaccinations are up to date according to the schedule of your home country, with particular attention to vaccines for yellow fever, polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria, and tetanus.

You do not need to provide proof of proficiency in the Portuguese language to enter Brazil. However, it is important to have some basic knowledge of the language. The Ministry of Education offers free online language courses, including Portuguese. You can apply using your passport number.

If you are arriving in Brazil by air, one option is to land at Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) in Porto Alegre and take a bus to Santa Maria. You may access bus timetables from Porto Alegre to Santa Maria through this link.

In Santa Maria, there are two bus stations: one is located near the center, and the other is situated in Camobi (the neighborhood where UFSM is located). If you plan to get off at the Camobi station, it is the first stop when coming from Porto Alegre, and you should inform the driver accordingly.

Another option is to take a direct flight to Santa Maria Airport (RIA), but note that it is a smaller airport with limited flight options. Flight schedules between Santa Maria and Porto Alegre, as well as other cities in the region, can be checked on the company’s website: http://www.voeazul.com.br.

Upon your arrival in Santa Maria, it is essential to report to the International Affairs Office (SAI) at UFSM to submit your documents and request enrollment. SAI is located in building 47 (Central Administrative Offices), on the 7th floor, room 739. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Passport

Your passport must remain valid for the entire duration of studies in Brazil. Please note that if your passport expires during your stay in Brazil, you must travel to the city where the embassy for your country is located to renew it. The expenses for this process are entirely your responsibility.

Visa

The process and the required documentation for acquiring a Brazilian Visa depend on the Brazilian embassy/consulate in your home country. Please contact them to obtain the visa before coming to Brazil.

CPF

You can request your Social Security Number registration (CPF) along with the Visa at the Brazilian diplomatic representation in your country. Alternatively, you may also request the CPF through the Brazilian Government website by clicking on the “iniciar” (start) option.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for all exchange programs, except for PEC-G/PEC-PLE. It must be valid from the moment you leave your home country until the moment you return. Housing

Students are responsible for selecting and arranging their accommodation. UFSM does not mediate this process (unless for AUGM students), but we offer some options below to assist foreigners in their search.

The university campus is in Camobi, approximately 10km away from the center of Santa Maria.

The main advantage of living in Camobi is the possibility of living close to UFSM. In addition, the university campus is a great option for leisure activities and outdoor sports. However, some lodges can be considerably far, and transport options are limited, since Camobi is one of the biggest neighborhoods in Santa Maria. Requesting rides via taxi apps in Camobi can be also challenging, given the limited number of drivers in the area. Therefore, if you intend to live in Camobi, beware of the bus routes and the proximity to UFSM.

On the other hand, the benefits of living in the Center or any other nearby neighborhood are a better infrastructure and a greater variety of shopping, entertainment, and restaurant options. In addition, there are more bus stops to get to UFSM compared to Camobi. Travel time from the Center to UFSM is approximately 40 minutes, which can vary depending on traffic and means of transportation.

Friendly Housing

The “Friendly Housing” program, initiated by the International Affairs Office (SAI) of UFSM, connects locals interested in providing accommodation with foreigners who need a place to stay. Rental prices are negotiated directly between the Brazilian host and the foreigner; SAI does not intermediate in the negotiation. The updated list with available options, including results from the satisfaction survey for housing that has hosted foreigners in previous semesters, will be sent to your email. Once you receive the list, you can choose the best option and contact the host.

Airbnb

If you prefer, you can search for other housing options in Camobi (the neighborhood of UFSM), or in the city center, approximately 10km from the university.

Real Estate Agencies

There are numerous real estate agencies in Santa Maria where you can find apartments and houses for rent. Typically, rental agreements are for at least one year, and sometimes landlords require tenants to have a guarantor who can assume financial responsibility. Some options of real estate agencies close to UFSM are listed below:

Brazilian friend

Before your arrival in Brazil, you will receive contact information of your assigned Brazilian friend. This friend, either a student, administrative staff, or faculty member at UFSM, applied for and was selected by the International Affairs Office (SAI). Your Brazilian friend will:

  • Contact you before your arrival in Brazil to provide information about UFSM and the city where you will be staying (Santa Maria, Cachoeira do Sul, Frederico Westphalen, or Palmeira das Missões);
  • Meet you at the bus station or airport on the scheduled date and time of your arrival;
  • Assist you in finding temporary accommodation if necessary;
  • Guide you through the campus;
  • Assist you in connecting with your Program Office and the Provost Office for Undergraduate Studies;
  • Assist you in your initial purchases (phone, bedding, and food);
  • Be available whenever you need assistance;
  • Keep SAI informed about your adaptation and any difficulties you may face.

Proof of Address

Once you arrive at UFSM and visit SAI, we will assist you in generating your proof of address in Brazil, which is necessary for applying for other important documents. Typically, this involves obtaining a copy of the electricity or internet bill that includes your full name and address. Alternatively, your Brazilian Friend may also assist you in obtaining your proof of address.

RNM

To apply for the National Migratory Registration (RNM), you need to complete the online form after arriving in Brazil. Upon arrival at SAI, we will assist you in completing the form and gathering the necessary documents for obtaining the RNM, which includes:

  • Copy of the original valid Passport (simple copy – pages with the registers);
  • Original form of the Visa request;
  • Birth or Marriage Certificate or Consular Certificate (with affiliation data) (original and simple copy);
  • Declaration of the electronic address and other contact information (completed at UFSM);
  • Proof of address in Brazil;
  • Payment receipt for RNM issuance (R$ 204,77). Payment must be made in reais (the payment voucher is issued at UFSM);
  • Scheduling at the Federal Police (arranged at UFSM).

Enrollment at UFSM

Your enrollment registration at UFSM will be generated after your arrival at SAI, where you should bring the documentation previously requested via email. Once you are here, we will assist you in completing the request process in your program office.

Bank account

Our primary recommendation is that you open your bank account at Banco do Brasil (BB) as there is an agency conveniently located inside the campus. Alternatively, you may choose to open your account at Caixa Econômica Federal. To open your account, you must have a copy of your proof of enrollment at UFSM, proof of address, CPF, and RNM. Additionally, it is important to have your smartphone for authorizing digital transactions through the bank app. Guidance for this process will be provided at SAI or by your Brazilian Friend.

Public Transportation

University students are eligible for a 50% discount on bus fares for public transportation, with the current cost being R$ 2.50 (including the discount). To get the discount, students must register at the Public Transportation Association of Santa Maria (ATU), presenting their proof of address and proof of enrollment at UFSM at 419 Rio Branco Ave, Center, Santa Maria. For information on bus routes and schedules, please download the Urmob app, available on the App Store and Google Play

Downloading and Signing Up for the UFSM App

The UFSM App provides students and employees with access to several features, including information on the University Restaurant (RU), libraries, bus schedules, and courses absences and grades for the current semester. The app also provides a digital version of the Student Card (E-card), which is as valid as the physical one. Please note that to use the E-card for accessing the RU, you must include a valid selfie during your registration on the App. The App is available for download on the App Store and Google Play, and access for signing up will be granted upon arrival at UFSM.

Accessing RU and Library

The University Restaurant (RU) offers three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The price of meals for regularly enrolled students at UFSM is R$2.50. To get access to RU, students must use their physical Student Card or the E-card (in the UFSM App).

To access the archieve of any of UFSM’s 13 libraries, students must provide their enrollment number at UFSM and a valid photo ID card. For more information about UFSM’s libraries, please visit the Library Website.

Public Health System

In Brazil, the public healthcare system is known as the Unified Health System, often abbreviated as SUS. SUS is a government-funded healthcare system designed to provide universal access to healthcare services for all residents, including foreign students. It offers a range of medical services, from primary care to specialized treatments. As a student, you can typically access SUS by registering at a local health clinic, known as a “posto de saúde.” Upon registration, you’ll receive a SUS card, which allows you to schedule appointments and receive medical care. SUS covers a broad spectrum of healthcare services, including doctor visits, vaccinations, emergency care, and hospitalization. However, it’s important to note that waiting times for non-urgent services can vary, and some students may opt for private health insurance for quicker access and additional services.

Welcoming Week

We highly recommend arriving in Santa Maria at least one week before your classes begin so that you can participate in the activities of the welcoming week. These activities include sightseeing tours in UFSM and Santa Maria, Portuguese workshops, and assistance with processing documentation and enrollment. Further information about the orientation week will be communicated via email.

Portuguese Courses

Once you arrive at UFSM, depending on your exchange program type, SAI will direct you to the adequate free course of Portuguese as a Foreign Language.

If you wish, you may also explore the options of courses offered by the Languages without Borders program at UFSM. The program offers free courses of foreign languages for academic purposes, including Portuguese, to both the academic and external community. The duration of the courses ranges from 16 to 48 hours, and they are typically conducted online. For information about the availability of courses each semester and how to apply, please visit https://www.ufsm.br/projetos/ensino/isf.

Useful Information

Weather

Santa Maria experiences a subtropical climate and is known for the notable temperature variations, even within the same day. Be prepared for both high and low temperatures, as well as a mix of sunny and rainy days.

The months with the highest temperatures are November, December, January, February, and March (spring-summer), with temperature highs ranging from 30ºC to 27ºC (86ºF to 80.6ºF). On the other hand, June and July (winter) are the coldest months, averaging around 10ºC (50ºF), with a maximum temperature of 19ºC (66.2ºF). However, experiencing higher temperatures during these months is not uncommon. In April, May (fall), August, September, and October (winter-spring), temperatures usually range from 11ºC to 25ºC (51.8ºF to 77ºF).

Culture

The weather in Rio Grande do Sul significantly influences its culture, setting it apart from the rest of Brazil. While Brazil is known for its tropical climate, ideal for beach visits, outdoor sports, and samba music gatherings, Rio Grande do Sul, as the coldest state in the country, hosts different cultural traditions. Although summers can be very hot, beach outgoings are not easily accessible for everyone. For instance, Santa Maria is approximately 450 km (about 280 miles) away from the popular beaches in Rio Grande do Sul.

The cold weather influences the culture in Rio Grande do Sul in several ways. On extremely cold days, it is common to spend more time at home or to go out for dinner in restaurants with fireplaces. In addition, Rio Grande do Sul is known for the chimarrão culture, a hot drink that warms us during cold days, although it is enjoyed at any temperature. Made from mate tea, it is shared in a circle of friends. The preparation and consumption of chimarrão are considered a social ritual, promoting interaction, friendship, and respect. Offering chimarrão to visitors is common as a sign of hospitality.

Another aspect influencing the cultural traditions of Rio Grande do Sul is gastronomy. Our typical food is churrasco, a meal that represents a unique way of preparing and appreciating meat. Characterized by large cuts of meat, especially beef, seasoned with coarse salt, and slowly grilled over firewood or coal, churrasco is a social activity frequently shared in significant family events or among friends. Chimarrão is also a part of the churrasco event, representing a celebration of the culture and tradition of Rio Grande do Sul. This tradition is so common that almost every apartment, even the smallest ones, has a built-in barbecue.

Italian immigration has also brought additional gastronomic traditions for our region. From hearty pasta dishes and artisanal pizzas to delectable desserts like tiramisu and cannoli, you’ll find an abundance of Italian-inspired delights in the city’s eateries. Local markets provide an assortment of fresh produce and Italian ingredients. From olive oils and cheeses to aromatic herbs, these markets showcase the influence of Italian culinary traditions, providing a feast for your senses.

Finally, it is important to highlight the hospitality culture of Santa Maria. Besides UFSM, the city is home to other reputable universities and research institutions. For this reason, many university students come to study and live away from their hometowns, building strong connections with their classmates, roommates, and friends. Many spots in the city cater to this university public, such as bars, cafeterias, and nightclubs with accessible prices.

Banking system

The banking system in Brazil consists of various banks that provide financial services like checking and savings accounts, loans, and credit cards. Nowadays, it is very common to conduct all the transactions online through the banks’ apps, including bill payments and transfers to other accounts. Additionally, the PIX system is available for any bank account, allowing instant money transfers between individuals and businesses, whether using the same or different banks, with no fees.

Sockets and voltage

The current official standard for plugs and sockets is the three-prong outlet, but you can also find two-prong outlets in some places. The voltage in the city of Santa Maria is 220 volts, so make sure your devices are designed to use this voltage or are dual voltage.

Telephone and internet services

To get a mobile phone service in Brazil, you can subscribe to plans offered by providers such as Vivo, Claro, TIM, or Oi. Simply purchase a SIM card and select a plan at a local store or kiosk. Prepaid plans are prevalent, allowing you to pay in advance for a certain amount of talk time and data, though postpaid plans are also an option.

For internet access, you can choose between fixed broadband and mobile data. Fixed broadband is provided by companies like NET, Vivo Fibra, or Oi Velox. They offer different plans with varying speeds and data limits, which can be reviewed on the companies’ websites. Once you have selected the plan that suits your needs, the necessary equipment will be set up for you. Mobile data plans are available through your mobile phone provider, and you can conveniently choose the best plan simultaneously with your mobile phone service.
