Important information
Before arriving in Brazil, make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines. While proof of vaccination is not required for entry, the Ministry of Health recommends ensuring that your vaccinations are up to date according to your home country’s recommendations, with particular attention to vaccines for yellow fever, polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria, and tetanus.
Proof of proficiency in Portuguese is not required, however, having some basic knowledge of the language is beneficial. The Ministry of Education offers free online Portuguese courses, which you can access using your passport number.
If you are arriving in Brazil by air, you can land at Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) in Porto Alegre and take a bus to Santa Maria. Bus timetables from Porto Alegre to Santa Maria are available through this link.
Alternatively, you can take a direct flight to Santa Maria Airport (RIA). Please note that it is a smaller airport with limited flight options. You can check flight schedules between Santa Maria and Porto Alegre, as well as other cities in the region, on the company’s website: http://www.voeazul.com.br.
If you are arriving by bus, please note that in Santa Maria there are two bus stations: one is located near the center, and the other is situated in Camobi (the neighborhood where UFSM is located). To obtain the discount, students must register at the Public Transportation Association of Santa Maria (ATU) with their proof of address and proof of enrollment at UFSM. The ATU office is located at 419 Rio Branco Ave, Center, Santa Maria. For information on bus routes and schedules, please download the Urmob app, available on the App Store and Google Play.
The UFSM App
The UFSM App provides information on the university restaurants (RU), libraries, bus schedules, and current semester course absences and grades. The app also includes a digital version of the Student Card (E-card), which is equally valid as the physical one. Please note that to use the E-card at the RU, you must upload a valid selfie to the app. The app is available for download at the App Store and Google Play. Access to create an account will be granted upon your arrival at UFSM.
Accessing RU and Library
University Restaurant (RU)
The University Restaurant (RU) offers three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The cost for regularly enrolled students at UFSM is R$2.50 per meal. To access the RU, students must use either their physical Student Card or the E-card available in the UFSM App.
Libraries

Public Health System
In Brazil, the public healthcare system is known as the Unified Health System, often abbreviated as SUS. SUS is a government-funded healthcare system designed to provide universal access to healthcare services for all residents, including foreign students. It offers a range of medical services, from primary care to specialized treatments. As a student, you can typically access SUS by registering at a local health clinic, known as a “posto de saúde“. Upon registration, you’ll receive a SUS card, which allows you to schedule appointments and receive medical care. SUS covers a broad range of healthcare services, including doctor visits, vaccinations, emergency care, and hospitalization. However, it’s important to note that waiting times for non-urgent services can vary, and some students may opt for private health insurance for quicker access and additional services.
International Student Welcome Week
We highly recommend arriving in Santa Maria at least one week before your classes begin so that you can participate in the activities of the International Student Welcome Week. These activities include sightseeing tours in UFSM and Santa Maria, Portuguese workshops, and assistance with processing documentation and enrollment. Further information about the orientation week will be communicated via email.
Portuguese Courses
Once you arrive at UFSM, SAI will direct you to the appropriate free course of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, depending on your exchange program type.
If you wish, you may also explore the options of courses offered by the Languages without Borders program at UFSM. The program offers free courses of foreign languages for academic purposes, including Portuguese, to both the academic and external community. The duration of the courses ranges from 16 to 48 hours, and they are typically conducted online. For information about the availability of courses each semester and how to apply, please visit Languages without Borders.
Buddy Program
Before your arrival in Brazil, you will receive contact information of your assigned Buddy. This person, who is either a student, administrative staff member, or faculty member at UFSM, applied for and was selected by SAI. Your Buddy will:

- Assist you with your initial purchases (phone service, bedding, and food).
- Be available if you need assistance.
- Keep SAI informed about your adaptation and any difficulties you may face.
Housing
Students are responsible for selecting and arranging their accommodation. UFSM does not mediate this process (except for AUGM students), but we offer the options listed below to aid in the search.
The university campus is located in Camobi, approximately 10 km from the center of Santa Maria.
The main advantage of living in Camobi is the proximity to UFSM. Additionally, the university campus offers great options for leisure activities and outdoor sports. However, as Camobi is one of the largest neighborhoods in Santa Maria, some accommodations may be quite far from campus and transportation options are limited. Requesting rides via taxi apps in Camobi can also be challenging due to the limited number of drivers in the area. Therefore, if you intend to live in Camobi, be aware of the bus routes and the distance from UFSM.
On the other hand, the benefits of living in the city center or other nearby neighborhoods include better infrastructure and a greater variety of shopping, entertainment, and restaurant options. Travel time from the center to UFSM is approximately 40 minutes, which can vary depending on traffic and means of transportation.
Friendly Housing
The “Host an International Student” program, managed by SAI, connects local residents interested in offering accommodation with international students and visitors in need of a place to stay. Rental prices are negotiated directly between the Brazilian host and the international guest; SAI does not mediate these negotiations. An updated list of available housing options, including feedback from a satisfaction survey conducted among previous international guests, will be sent to your email. Once you receive the list, you can select the best option and contact the host directly.
Airbnb
If you prefer, you can search for other housing options in Camobi (the neighborhood where UFSM is located), or in the city center, approximately 10km from the university.

Weather
Santa Maria has a subtropical climate and is known for considerable temperature variations, even within the same day. Be prepared for both high and low temperatures, as well as a mix of sunny and rainy days.
The months with the highest temperatures are November, December, January, February, and March (spring-summer), with highs normally ranging from 27ºC to 30ºC (80.6ºF to 86ºF). Conversely, June and July (winter) are the coldest months, averaging around 10ºC (50ºF), with maximum temperatures of 19ºC (66.2ºF). However, it is not uncommon to experience higher temperatures during these months as well. In April, May (fall), August, September, and October (winter-spring), temperatures usually range from 11ºC to 25ºC (51.8ºF to 77ºF).
Culture
The weather in Rio Grande do Sul shapes its culture and sets it apart from the rest of Brazil. While Brazil is known for its tropical climate, ideal for beach trips, outdoor sports, and samba music events, Rio Grande do Sul has the coldest climate in the country, leading to different cultural traditions. Rio Grande do Sul is known for chimarrão, a hot tea that warms you up on cold days, although it is enjoyed throughout the year. Made from mate tea, people often drink it while sitting in a circle and passing it around. The preparation and consumption of chimarrão are considered a social ritual, promoting friendship and chit-chat. Offering chimarrão to visitors is a common sign of hospitality.
Gastronomy is another unique cultural tradition in Rio Grande do Sul. Our most typical food is churrasco, a unique type of barbeque. Characterized by large cuts of meat, especially beef, seasoned with coarse salt, and slowly grilled over firewood or coal, churrasco is a common social activity for family events or among friends. This tradition is so common that almost every apartment has a built-in barbecue grill.
Italian and German immigration has also brought additional culinary traditions to our region. From hearty pasta dishes and artisanal pizzas to delectable desserts like German kuchen, you’ll find an abundance of Italian and German-inspired delights in the city’s eateries and local markets.
Finally, it is important to highlight the warm hospitality of Santa Maria. Besides UFSM, the city is home to other reputable universities and research institutions. For this reason, many university students come to study and live away from their hometowns, building strong connections with their classmates, roommates, and friends. Many spots in the city cater to this university public, such as bars, cafés, and nightclubs with accessible prices.
Banking system
Several Brazilian banks provide financial services like checking and savings accounts, loans, and credit cards. Nowadays, it is very common to conduct all transactions online through the banks’ apps, including bill payments and transfers to other accounts. Additionally, the PIX system is available for any bank account, allowing instant money transfers with no fees between individuals and businesses, whether using the same or different banks.
Sockets and voltage
The current official standard for plugs and sockets is the three-prong outlet, but you can also find two-prong outlets in some places. The voltage in the city of Santa Maria is 220 volts, so make sure your devices are designed to use this voltage or are dual voltage.
Telephone and internet services
To get mobile phone service in Brazil, you can subscribe to plans offered by providers such as Vivo, Claro, TIM, or Oi. Simply purchase a SIM card and select a plan at a local store or kiosk. Prepaid plans are very commonplace, allowing you to pay in advance for a certain amount of talk time and data, though postpaid plans are also an option.
For internet access, you can choose between fixed broadband and mobile data. Fixed broadband is provided by companies like NET, Vivo Fibra, or Oi Velox. They offer different plans with varying speeds and data limits, which can be consulted on the companies’ websites. Once you have selected the plan that suits your needs, the necessary equipment will be set up for you. Mobile data plans are available through your mobile phone provider, and you can conveniently choose the best plan simultaneously with your mobile phone service.
